Nutrition Counseling / Frequently Asked Questions

What does a dietitian do?
A dietitian specializes in helping people choose foods that support health. This can vary dramatically from person to person. It has been said that one person’s food is another’s poison. Many people fear that a dietitian’s job is to take away all enjoyable foods. Not true! The goal of nutrition counseling is to help you find a balance between health-supporting foods and “recreational” foods so you can meet your nutrition goals.

How may visits will I need?
The number of visits needed to address your health concerns may vary depending on complexity and support needed. With that said, many concerns can be addressed in as few as one to three visits.

What will happen during my visit?
Kelly will take a detailed health and nutrition history – working with you to complete either a diet diary or food frequency questionnaire. Keeping your nutrition goals in mind, she will help you optimize your eating habits by providing you with the tools you need to make lasting changes. Kelly is able to provide recipes, menu plans, cooking tips, nutrition articles, book recommendations and shopping tours. A typical first visit lasts between 1 – 1.5 hours and follow-up visits are between 30 minutes and 1 hour.

Does insurance pay for nutritional counseling?
Many insurance plans do cover nutrition counseling for a variety of health conditions. In order to find out if your plan covers nutrition and whether or not you need a referral, you will need to call your health insurance provider (the number is listed on your health insurance card). Kelly accepts many insurance plans (click here for the list). A sliding scale is available for cash paying clients.
